8-year-old Derek Prue Jr. from Stony Plain (Canada) is shy about his birthmark on his chest – it is quite large. His father noticed that the boy did not take off his T-shirt in the pool. Without saying anything to his son, he went to the tattoo parlor and asked to make the same “birthmark” on his chest.
The tattoo on the chest and ribs was painful and took nine sessions (30 hours) to complete. For the last session, father and son have already come together.
Derek Prue Sr. decided to get a tattoo that matches his eight-year-old son’s birthmark to support him.
When a man went to a tattoo parlor for the first time, he thought he would get what he wanted in one session. It lasted about four hours, and during this time only a sketch of the future tattoo was made. Due to the location and size of the tattoo, the work took 30 hours. According to tattoo artist Tony Gibert, the area of the chest and ribs is very sensitive, and had to constantly use “freezing” (local anesthesia) for pain relief.
The boy did not know about his father’s idea until they went to the pool together. “I just took off my shirt and showed that I have the same mark on my body as his,” says Derek Sr. And it worked: the guy stopped being shy and uncomfortable while undressing.
On December 9, father and son came together to the tattoo parlor to see the tattoo artist so that he could compare the original and the copy. Photos and words appeared on the tattoo studio’s Facebook page about how great it is when a father is ready to do such a thing just to help his son gain confidence. Derek Jr.’s mother, Hope Marie, thank the tattoo studio for their work, writing, “Thanks for everything you did, it means a lot to my son.”
